The Providence Hospital was established in Fort St. John, BC in August of 1931 by the Catholic Sisters of Providence. The Sisters, Sr. Marie Gilberte, Sr. Agatha and Sr. Catherine de Bologne, accompanied by Father Luc Beuglet. Soon after they were joined by Sr. Gerard Majella and Sr. Alfred de la Croix and Dr. Hubert Brown was recruited to be the doctor for the new hospital. The hospital was a great asset to Fort St. John and the surrounding areas and through the years it was actively supported by the community through volunteerism and donations. The Sisters in their distinctive habits were a familiar and welcome sight throughout the community. The Providence Hospital finally closed in 1962 to make way for a new hospital better equipped to deal with a flourishing Fort St. John. |
