Come and join an amazing group of volunteers as they work to preserve and present the history of Fort St. John and area.
We’re a one-staff museum and volunteers are crucial to helping us do everything from events to archives. Our volunteers put in so many hours each year that they make up between one and two full-time staff positions!

Volunteer Opportunities
Archives & Collections Volunteer
Archival and Collections volunteers can choose their own hours and how often they come in. They work on projects such as inputting data about our artefacts into our database, uploading photographs to the database, scanning photographs, helping to organize collections storage, and doing research. Newspaper volunteers help scan and index our newspaper collection. Training is provided as needed.
Director (Board of Directors)
Sitting on the Board of Directors is not as daunting as it sounds! It requires you to meet with the rest of the Board and the Manager/Curator for about two hours on the third Wednesday of each month. Directors are encouraged to participate in museum events or serve on museum committees as they are able.
Events & Fundraising Volunteer
Events and fundraising volunteers help out with planning and hosting special events and fundraisers such as our AGM, yard sale, documentary nights, Kids’ Nights, cemetery tours, pie sale, Christmas tea, etc. We are open to new events and fundraisers. These volunteers are also welcome to help us acquire sponsorship for events, operations, displays, etc.
Gift Shop Volunteer
Gift Shop volunteers come in and watch the gift shop for approximately two hours one day a week. They assist customers in the gift shop, operate the cash register, answer the phone, clean the gift shop, and work on small tasks.
Exhibits & Maintenance Volunteer
We are always looking for people who are willing to help out around the museum, fixing things, mowing the lawn (with our ride on tractor), restoring buildings, and constructing exhibits. We are often looking for heavy lifters as well to help move large items.
Tour Guide Volunteer
Tour Guide volunteers help out with guided tours of the museum for all ages. Most of our tours are for school groups (kindergarten-high school). We divide students into small groups so need 3-5 volunteers for each class tour. If this interests you but you don’t know what to say, we can help you develop your own tour and you can shadow some of our tour guides.
